How Maggie reminded me that love will always find its way back…

Losing a pet truly feels like a piece of your heart has broken off. My freshman year of high school was when my first childhood cat, Penelope, passed away. I was beyond heartbroken as I didn’t get a proper goodbye to the absolute best kitty in the world. I truly didn’t think that I would ever share a bond like I had with Penelope with any other pet in my life. I remember the silence that lingered after she passed, and my empty bed where she curled up every night, which left my heart feeling heavy.
One day, a few months after Penelope’s passing, while I was scrolling Facebook per usual, I came across a post from my childhood best friend’s dad. He posted that his family was moving, and sadly, they couldn’t bring their cat, Maggie, with them. He expressed only wanting the best home for her, and my heart truly stopped for a moment because I already knew Maggie.
Funny enough, I was there on the day my best friend’s family adopted her at PetSmart back in 2013. Her mom packed her and me in the car, and we picked out a kitten altogether, and I even got to help them name her! Sadly, they moved shortly after getting her, and I didn’t see much of them after that. That memory of that day is beyond special, as my best friend’s mom passed away, and Maggie serves to hold a special piece of her heart.
I knew my childhood best friend was not necessarily excited to have to get rid of Maggie, so I immediately begged my parents to let me adopt her. I wanted her to have the ability to know she was going to someone who truly would take great care of her and always have the option to see her if she wanted. It felt meant to be. And when Maggie came home, she fit into my life as if it were.
Maggie healed me in ways that I truly did not expect. I thought the love that I had shared with my first kitty was the most I’d ever have for a cat. But Maggie has taught me something even deeper. That every companion has their own unique kind of love to bring to our lives. Maggie didn’t replace my loss; she expanded my heart and made room for more love and joy.
I’ve had friends who joke that Maggie and I share the same personality. If I were a cat, they say that I would probably be her. And I truly do think they are right. It’s so comforting to be understood by a precious soul of purrs.
Adopting Maggie truly changed me. She has reminded me that love doesn’t just end when it feels lost; it evolves into something beautiful that you can appreciate more. Rescuing a cat or any animal isn’t just about giving a pet a home. It’s about finding a companion that fills the holes or spaces of your heart you didn’t even know needed it.
I am beyond grateful to get to share my life and space with Maggie. I find immense amounts of joy watching her sunbathe for hours, make biscuits on my head, or getting the zoomies around my home. I’m appreciative of seeing that Facebook post and giving both Maggie and me a second chance. Maggie has been more than just a cat to me; she’s a constant, affectionate best friend who is proof of our hearts’ capabilities of always making room for more love, even after loss.
