Creating a Space To Live Happily With Cats

Updated: Oct 22, 2025

How to make your home functional, cozy, and approved by your cat companion.

Living with cats means sharing every space. Whether it’s your couch, windowsills, counters, baskets, or even a plant pot, we don’t have much say in where kitties want to relax. Keeping this in mind, we want to create a home that works for ourselves as well as our cat that doesn’t have to sacrifice our comfort or style. With just a bit more thought and love, you can create a space that is as cozy to you as it is for your cat.

As most of us probably know, cats seek out warmth, security, and tall points to allow them to observe the world from a comfy spot. Most importantly, we want our cats to feel safe in their environment. When we focus on their natural instincts, we can make our homes feel more harmonious when thinking of how to design the space for both the cat and the human!

Starting with a basic, your cat might prefer a vertical space. Creating cat-only spots within your home allows them to feel calm and confident. It could be a window perch, shelves that support their weight, or even a tall cat tree that matches your décor style. There are so many different websites these days that support modern/aesthetic cat furniture that allows your kitty to have the space they need with the style you like. Think of your cat needing space, like how sometimes we as humans prefer a cozy reading nook, they also need a space to feel comfortable and recharge, just like us.

Next, we can focus on the overall comfort and textures that our cats prefer. Cats love soft and cozy blankets, baskets, and anything that smells familiar to them…A.K.A. us! So instead of seeing their fur on the furniture and being frustrated, take it as a reward and compliment of the beautiful and warm shared life with kitties. Choose fabrics and features that are durable and easy to clean if you know your cat might be intrigued by the item in your home.

You can even add touches to your home that enrich your cat’s life. Something like a view of the birds or squirrels in your yard, a patch of sunlight that your cat has a dedicated spot to lay in, or even soft beds or rugs your kitty can lie and stretch on. It doesn’t have to be huge, just think if you were your cat, what would make your life better? Even our décor choices reflect the love that we have for our cats. Making sure that our plants are safe for them, the photos we hang of them on display, or even the small cat-themed items that truly bring us owners joy. There are endless ways to show our cats love and respect within our homes.

Creating a cat-friendly environment in our homes isn’t just about a scratching post or catnip toys. It’s about designing spaces that cultivate connection and reflect the love we have for our companions. When creating our home with our cats in mind, we are reminded to make room for the little joys and comforts that slow us down and embrace the beauty of a cat’s existence in our shared spaces.

Your home doesn’t have to be “perfect” for your cat because they simply don’t care that hard. What they need is to feel at peace within the space. An enjoyable home for a cat is one with quiet corners, cozy blankets, and people who make the space inviting for them to be their curious selves.

Put yourself in your kitty’s paws and look around your home from their perspective. If you were their size, where would you want to nap at? Anything you think would be fun to climb or explore?  If you notice anything, brainstorm ways you might create a happy and safe space for your kitty. Sometimes all we need is to view the world the way our cats do to get ideas on what to do next!
