Retrospective Reflection
Developing as a Strategic Communicator
While pursuing my degree at IU Indianapolis in the Honors College, my understanding and skills in communication have evolved from simply talking/writing my ideas to intentionally designing messages that have the ability to shape how people think, feel, and engage.
As a Communication Studies major, my Honors experience has allowed me to bridge more theory and practice into my academic career, which has ultimately shaped my emerging expertise in audience-centered communication through digital storytelling and strategic content creation.
I no longer just communicate ideas,
I design messages with
intention,
audience awareness,
and purpose.
Translating Theory into Meaningful Communication
One of my most impactful experiences was my Family Communication Theory infographic Honors project. In this project, I created three visual representations of family communication theories, including the Communicated Narrative Sense-Making Theory, Communication Privacy Management, and the Communication Theory of Resilience. These theories were developed by scholars such as Sandra Petronio and Patrice Buzzanell, who each explored how individuals make meaning, manage boundaries, and navigate difficult family experiences through communication.
This project took more than just understanding the theory from class, but it also challenged me to translate complex academic concepts into clear, meaningful, and visually accessible content that someone outside of the course could understand. An example of this was with the CPM theory infographic, as the theory emphasizes the concept of individuals creating and negotiating privacy boundaries with explicit and clear rules. While designing the infographic, I had to manage simplifying the concept and all the research I had done into one page while still maintaining the accuracy and depth of what the theory is trying to convey.
In this experience, I had to hone in on my skills in audience awareness, clarity, and visual communication, which are all essential to the field I will pursue.
This project shows that my work achieves the Honors goal of developing strong communication and problem-solving skills. In this project, I showed my ability to analyze complex theories, identify the key concepts, and design content that effectively communicates those ideas to a broader audience.
Applying Communication in Real-World Contexts
While my Honors projects have helped me understand communication theory, my Digital Content Strategy and Creation for Web and Media course projects have allowed me to apply those concepts in real-world contexts. Throughout this course, I have developed multiple web-based projects that required me to think strategically about my audience, message, purpose, and usability of the content I’m creating.
The example of the Financial Framework Partners webpage I created shows how I focused on crafting a message that was approachable and relevant for young adults and families seeking help regarding investing in their future. This required me to consider not only what information was most important to include, but also how to structure the page in a way that is clear, engaging, and checks the boxes for both the client I worked with and their audience viewing the page. I applied principles of web writing, like making sure the page information was scannable, including strong headings, visual hierarchy, and a user-centered design that ensures the content message is effective.
I have also created similar projects in the course, like for a painting company named Pere Marquette Painting, where I created a web page for them, specifically for their commercial painting process. This required me to adapt my tone and messaging to a professional audience, while also emphasizing clarity, trust, and efficiency within the company’s process.
Through these projects, I have been pushed to move beyond simple writing content and instead approach it through a strategic process. My work within this course is proof of achieving the Honors goal of participating in engaged and applied learning experiences. Creating content that functions for real audiences and businesses’ practical needs, this experience has helped me connect my academic experience to the professional application of my skills. I find that projects like these have been central to shaping my career goals and have helped me realize my true passion for content strategy, digital communication, and creating meaningful experiences for users in all digital spaces.
Developing My Voice as a Communicator
Another area of development in my Honors experience came from my Finding Your E-Voice course, where I enhanced a stronger sense of my online identity and voice as a communicator. The course required me to think more critically about how personal perspective, tone, and style all influence the way my messages will be received by an audience. I created The Cozy Cat Corner blog with scheduled posts that centered on the topic of celebrating cats as companions, respected icons, and a source of joy for cat lovers on the internet.
This blog taught me that effective communication is not just about clarity, but also about authenticity and being intentional. This realization had a lasting impact on my work. Whether it’s when creating web content, designing visuals, or writing specific messages for audiences, I now consider not only what I am communicating, but how my voice contributes to the user’s experience and the power of the messages.
My work in the course is proof of understanding the Honors goal of being an active participant in my intellectual experiences. I was required to reflect on my growth, experiment with different approaches to communication, and intentionally polish my voice over the process, which is essential in creating meaningful and effective communication.
Reflection and Emerging Expertise
Throughout my entire Honors experience, it’s projects and courses like these that have shaped me into a more intentional and strategic communicator. I have learned key skills in translating theory into practice, applying communication skills in real-world contexts, and developed a voice that reflects clarity, knowledge, and purpose.
My experiences as an honors student reflect the growth I have made as a learner, and through my portfolio, I can integrate and recognize the skills that have developed and express my emerging expertise. I am confident in my ability to create communication that is thoughtful, impactful, and user-centered.
My future goals include building these skills by continuing to work on digital content strategy and communication design projects that create informational and meaningful spaces to engage audiences both in-person and digitally.
